Member Spotlight: Buckeye Premier Youth Soccer League

In our latest Member Spotlight, we’re taking a closer look at Buckeye Premier Youth Soccer League (BPYSL).

BPYSL is celebrating its 31st year in 2022 – the competitive/travel league began in 1991 and has been a staple in Ohio’s youth soccer landscape. Originally started with just 10 teams in the Cincinnati & Columbus areas, the league has expanded and now includes over 650 participating teams in Columbus, Toledo, Dayton, and Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky. Some of the first members included Club Ohio (different than the one today), Blast FC, Express, and several other teams.

The central league office is located in Columbus (Worthington), with satellite offices in Cincinnati and Dayton.

OSA caught up with BPYSL President George Sauer for a few questions.

  • What kinds of program(s) and opportunities do you offer?

We are a competitive league and proud member of Ohio Soccer Association. We have both fall and spring seasons, with various divisions that span a deep plethora of talent levels – starting with elite level talent in our State divisions at the top and moving from there. This allows teams to place themselves at the level they feel is adequate to give them good competition. Since we are a member of OSA, our teams are eligible to participate in post-season events in the spring that can lead to national exposure, such as State and Presidents Cups.

  • What values does your league have?

Our goal has always been to get kids on the fields playing and provide a highly competitive environment for teams. Beyond that, we strive for administrative excellence and convenience. That’s why we have satellite offices in several major metro areas in Ohio and an expanded staff to help make the season as simple as possible.

  • Why should teams play in your league?

I think there are many reasons. First, we care about those participating in our league and want each player, parent, and team to have a positive experience with us. We work hard to create a good league environment for the players (and coaches and parents too!). We are working hard to listen to what our participating teams want from their league. Second, we have a high level of competition within the league. Third, we offer administrative support at a local level that allows us to get to know our teams and clubs on a personal basis.
